Driving Lessons (2006), written and directed by Jeremy Brock, is a coming-of-age story that centres on Ben (Rupert Grint), the shy son of a vicar. The drama-comedy was loosely based on Jeremy Brocks own life. Filmed in Hampstead, London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. Similarities between this drama and Harold and Maude have been noted.SynopsisSeventeen-year-old Ben Marshall (Rupert Grint) is trying to escape from the domineering influence of his heavily religious mother (Laura Linney), wife of the local vicar, Robert Marshall (Nicholas Farrell). His world changes when he meets Dame Evie Walton (Julie Walters), a retired actress.PlotSeventeen-year-old Ben Marshall (Rupert Grint) is a shy, quiet boy who is dominated by his heavily religious mother, Laura (Laura Linney).
She keeps him on a tight leash, refusing to pay for driving lessons, insisting that as she has been a driver for twenty-five years, there is no point in anyone else teaching him, refusing to buy him a mobile phone, believing that they cause cancer, and insisting that he help her in her Christian charity works such as preparing food for the elderly, acting in her Girl Guides play (as a eucalyptus tree) and caring for a mute old man, Mr. Fincham (Jim Norton), whom she believes to be recovering from shock after running over his own wife.Ben is the only one who seems to see his mothers hypocrisy; although she is kind and charitable to others, and frequently preaches the word of God, she puts no effort into keeping her own family together and spends a suspicious amount of time at the home of the young local priest, Peter (Oliver Milburn). When Bens mother asks him to take on a summer job, using the money to help Mr. Fincham back onto his feet, he applies for a position advertised in the church magazine to escort a retired actress, Dame Evie Walton (Julie Walters). (Although Evie herself doesnt believe in God, As a single woman acutely aware of the dangers of sexual assault by younger men.) Her eccentric ways and free, say-what-you-think attitude soon begin to lure Ben out of his shell and out from under the monopolizing control of his mother. He is, at first, embarrassed by Evie -- especially when she begins expressing her opinions on what teenage boys should behave like, loudly, on the public bus -- and when she furiously berates him for going through her personal possessions and photographs, he decides to hand in his notice. Evie, however, wont hear a word of it. She asks Ben to read through her favourite Shakespearian scenes with her and soon Ben gets into the spirit of things.
