Goyas Ghosts is a 2006 Spanish film directed by Academy Award winner Milo? Forman (Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest), Xuxa Producciones (Spain) and by Saul Zaentz (The English Patient, Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest), and written by Milo? Forman and Jean-Claude Carrière. The film stars Academy Award nominee Natalie Portman, Academy Award nominee Javier Bardem, and Stellan Skarsgård, and was shot on location in Spain during late 2005.Two of Forman and Zaentzs previous collaborations, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Amadeus, won the team both Best Director and Best Picture Oscars in 1975 and 1984, respectively.PlotThe first part of the film is set in 1792 in Spain, amidst the turmoil of the French Revolution. Francisco Goya is a renowned painter, who, among others, paints members of the royal family.The Spanish Inquisition is disturbed by part of Goyas work. Brother Lorenzo is a friend of Goya and defends him, saying that his works are not evil, they just show evil.
He recommends the Inquisition to step up the fight against anti-Roman-Catholic practices. He is put in charge of that.Goya paints the young woman Ines (Natalie Portman), daughter of the rich Tomas Bilbatua (José Luis Gómez). The Holy Office of the Inquisition orders Inez to come to the Office. There she is arrested and accused of being a heretic and practising Jewish rituals. She is tortured ("put to The Question"), confesses, and is left to perish in the dungeons.Tomas begs Goya for help, who in turn asks Lorenzo to find out about Inez situation. He visits her and abuses the situation by raping her.
