The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.

It is a complementary film to Eastwoods Flags of Our Fathers which depicts the same battle from the American viewpoint. The film is almost entirely in Japanese but was made by an American production company.The film was released in Japan on December 9, 2006 and received a limited release in the United States on December 20 in order to compete for the 79th Academy Awards.
