The film was based on the 1997 article A Farewell to Arms written for Wired magazine by John Carlin.PlotThe movie begins with criminal Mai Linh (Maggie Q) collaborating with unwitting civilian hackers, exchanging payment for algorithms and code. The hackers are then killed in their homes by C4 rigged to explode when a certain button (Delete) is pressed on the keyboard of the hackers home computers. Linhs computer screen shows that only one hacker, Matthew Farrell, has yet to be killed.Meanwhile, at one of the Rutgers University campuses (presumably Camden), Lucy McClane (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) holds off her aggressive boyfriend. Her father, John McClane (Bruce Willis), who was secretly parked nearby, breaks up the party. Lucy tells him to back off, then storms off to her dorm, while the boyfriend bolts. The frustrated detective is heading home when he receives a call from local law enforcement to go pick up a local hacker, since an FBI system has recently seen a breach and is taking hackers into custody.The hacker, Matt Farrell (Justin Long), answers the door, and despite humorous attempts to conceal his identity, McClane comes in to apprehend him.

The film was based on the 1997 article "A Farewell to Arms" written for Wired magazine by John Carlin.PlotAt the start of the film, a terrorist breaches a FBI facilitys computer system, and computer hackers are assassinated by the terrorist mastermind Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant), instead of being paid for their collaboration. The FBI, unaware of the killings, dispatches NYPD Police Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) to visit a known hacker, Matthew Farrell (Justin Long), as part of their investigation regarding the breach. Gabriels henchmen attempt to assassinate McClane and Farrell, but their targets escape. McClane transports Farrell to the FBIs Washington DC headquarters and its head, Assistant Director Bowman (Cliff Curtis), in the midst of a shutdown of the traffic system in DC. The stock market is manipulated shortly afterward, causing it to crash.McClane is ordered to take Farrell into protective custody, and Gabriel sends more henchmen to kill the pair. McClane and Farrell evade their assassins again, and as the countrys infrastructure is threatened with a major break down, Farrell tells McClane the terrorists are initiating a fire sale and that major utilities would be next.
