Miller moved to New York City to study theater after graduating from high school.
Millers film debut came in 1987 in Adventures in Babysitting, while in 1988 her role as Emily in Our Town garnered her a Tony award nomination. In 1990 she played Paula in the Oscar-nominated Awakenings, starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.
She has appeared in a number of TV and theatrical movies subsequently, notably as Edna Purviance in Chaplin in 1992 and as Gail in Carlitos Way in 1993. She appeared alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop. Just prior to this she had a role in the Gary Sinise directed film Miles from Home. She took the lead role in the big-budget creature feature The Relic (1997) as Dr. Margo Green.In 2002, she was in the film Dead in a Heartbeat and starred in a two-part episode of the A&E TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (Motherhunt). Her 2005 movie Funny Money was the top movie at the Sarasota Film Festival.
